Ile Fouquet Peros Banhos Oceanside 7m

Description
Early bleaching on boulders of the coral genus Porites Is seen in this photo, showing blue pigments after expulsion of algae. The water at this site, as in many we visited in 2015, was warm and commonly more than 30°C which has triggered coral bleaching. Commonly this is seen only after the event when the corals are fully bleached or even dead, but the initial stage is expulsion of the algae which lives symbiotically in the coral tissue, so that when the brown algae have gone the colour from the coral tissue remains visible for a while.
