Review of the benthic foraminiferal distribution on Chagos

On Peros Banhos atoll, sediments are bioclastic, composed largely of coral debris with Halimeda, and with a grain size from fine to coarse sand plus granule-sized gravel. The smaller foraminiferal assemblages (63 ?m-1.4 mm) are diverse with the lagoon being dominated by Calcarina calcar and the open sea by Amphistegina lessonii. Assemblages of larger foraminifera (>1.4 mm) show a great deal of compositional overlap but those strongly dominated by Heterostegina depressa are confined to the open sea whereas those dominated by Operculina ammonoides occur mainly in the lagoon. The foraminiferal fauna as a whole is typical of the tropical Indian Ocean.
