Section III -Atolls of the Maldiva Archipelago -Great Chagos Bank

This is Darwin's first monograph in which he lays out his theory of reef and atoll formation. Darwin was given notes and details from Captain Moresby after his expedition that visited among other places Chagos in 1837. Darwin describes the Great Chagos Bank as unique in the fact that they are submerged. Observations on the structures of the atolls of Diego Garcia, Speakers Bank, and Peros Banhos are made.
