Description

Under the command of Cpt Garforth the British Navy surveyed Diego Garcia for steam navigation. Following this in 1882 the Orient Steam Navigation Company set up a coaling station on Diego Garcia. This would serve the steam vessels trading between the UK and East (even Australia) via the Suez Canal.
