Fishes of the Chagos Archipelago.

A list of the 784 known fish species from the Chagos is presented. These are all epipelagic or shore fishes (i.e. demersal species occurring in less than 200m depth); the deep demersal, mesopelagic and bathypelagic fishes remain unstudied. The Chagos fish fauna is similar in general composition to that of the Maldives. The five most speciose families are the Gobiidae (gobies, 98 species), Labridae (wrasses, 63), Serranidae (groupers and relatives, 51), Muraenidae (moray eels, 41) and Pomacentridae (damselfishes, 38), which together account for 37% of the total fish fauna.
