The coral fauna of Diego Garcia lagoon following harbour construction

Early descriptions of Diego Garcia atoll report a fairly poor coral cover on lagoon knolls. Following dredging and blasting for military construction in this very enclosed lagoon a brief survey was made of the coral fauna on six knolls near the new anchorage. All showed a high diversity of species that compared well with nearby, unaffected atoll lagoons but had a very variable and low coral cover. The process of construction appears to have had no major or lasting effect on the coral diversity, and cover may not have changed as a result of the works. Oil or other toxic spillages remain a threat, and this survey forms a baseline in such events.
